Betty Knight Baldwin, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, passed away on July 29, 2024 at the Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Northborough, Massachusetts after complications from a fall. She was born on September 26, 1935 to the late William Edward Knight and Sarah Clarinda Blackwell Knight of Chesterfield, South Carolina. She was 88 years old.
Betty graduated from Furman University in 1957 and married Mart Gelzer Baldwin, Jr, of
Harrisburg, PA in 1958. She was a pianist and violist who loved performing classical music. She taught piano for many years to children and adults in Huntsville, AL and Newtown, PA, before moving to Massachusetts where she embarked on a serious study of viola. After mastering the viola and moving to Hendersonville, Betty played viola in the Asheville Symphony Orchestra and the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra. She also participated in many other music groups in the area. Betty was a strong supporter of the Hendersonville Symphony and a member of the Board of Directors for many years until retiring in 2017.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband Mart. She is survived by her sister Sarah Knight Lofton, of Charlotte, NC; and her three sons and their spouses, Edward and Julie Baldwin, Thomas and Martha Baldwin, and Glenn and Laura Baldwin; and nine grandchildren.
A family celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2024 in Massachusetts. A celebration of her life will also be held in Hendersonville, NC, tentatively on October 19, 2024. Interment will take place tentatively on October 20, 2024 in Chesterfield, SC. Details of the celebrations in Hendersonville and Chesterfield will be forthcoming.
