Born in Wilmington Delaware on January 2, 1932. His father was Edward W. Maass of Ridgewood New Jersey and his mother, Berniece Gale of Webster, MA. He attended Quaker schools until his sophomore year, eventually graduating from Woodstock Academy in Connecticut in 1949. He achieved his degree in engineering from Rensselaer Polytech, joined the Navy, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant JG. He would later achieve his advanced degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He leaves two sons, Mark E. Maass and his wife Susan (Paine) Maass of Auburn, Daniel N. Maass and his girlfriend Stephanie Blanco of Shrewsbury and a sister, Gale Rudolph of Alaska. He was predeceased by his son, Edward David Maass. Ralph was an avid designer and builder of boats, both pleasure craft and models. He once built his own 31’ cabin cruiser, ERMSON, in the backyard of his home in Auburn, which he spent many years enjoying in Point Judith, Rhode Island. He was a life member of Kiwanis International and United States Power Squadron. Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
