In memory of Joan Porch Gulovsen; June of 1937 to July of 2023. WORCESTER - Joan was born and raised in Portland ME, graduating from Deering High in 1955. She attended Douglass College, where she met her future husband Arthur Gulovsen, graduating in 1959. In 1959, she and Arthur married and subsequently had two boys; Anton and Carl, ultimately residing in Wellesley, MA in the same house for 57 years. Ever passionate on education and general learning she attended Simmons College in the mid 1960’s for a degree in Library Sciences and proceeded with a career as a Librarian in the Lexington Public School system. When her boys left home, eventually to attend college, she did the same attending several Boston based schools. She settled in the horticultural field, reworking her own yard into a veritable display of native plants as well as numerous other locations. She was passionately involved with Garden in the Woods and successfully represented their efforts at the Boston Flower show for several years. She loved to read, however contrary to her Librarian education she preferred to purchase her books. She was also an accomplished quilter with numerous examples of her handiwork surviving her, with many given to children of friends, and some of which taking years to complete due to complexity. She enjoyed lifetime of learning; excelling within the culinary arts, studying opera, decades supporting the Boston Ballet, and participating in yoga and travel. Unfortunately, in her last decade, dementia slowly crept through her life. A celebration of her life will be held in October, a Wellesley venue is anticipated. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Kelly Cremation & Funeral care of Worcester.
