WORCESTER: Lawrence J. McAuliffe, 89, of 102 Brattle St. , died Monday, July 9, 2007, in UMass Memorial Medical Center- University Campus, after a brief illness. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Phyllis C. (LeClaire) McAuliffe; two sons, Ralph Giangrande and his wife Patricia of Worcester; Gary L. McAuliffe and his wife Carol of Hawaii, a daughter, Gail M. McAuliffe of Worcester; a sister, Mary Kennedy of Amherst, formerly of West Boylston; two grandchildren, Jessica and Michael Giangrande; and several nieces and nephews. His brother, John D. McAuliffe, predeceased him. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Michael and Bridget (Donahoe) McAuliffe. He was a graduate of St. Peter's High School, Becker Junior College, and a life long resident of Worcester. He was an Army veteran of World War II and played semi-professional golf and baseball while stationed at Camp Cooke. He once played against Hall of Fame baseball legend, Joe DiMaggio. Larry worked 44 years for Massachusetts Electric, until retiring. He was a well-known New England golfer and member of Hillcrest Country Club, where he was a 4-time club champion. He was a longtime member of St. George's Church and former member of St. Bernard's Church. He enjoyed organic gardening and was a lifetime member of Red Sox Nation.
