With the utmost sorrow and woe, the family of Lowell (Buddy) Shorey Jr. are anguished to share the loss of the heart of their family. After a two-and-a-half-year brave battle with a second bout of cancer, Buddy passed away on Saturday, August 10, with his family by his side. As always, he faced everything he endured with grace and courage.
Buddy was born on April 6, 1960, to Lowell Shorey Sr. and the late Pauline(St. Martin) Maroni.
Buddy was a remarkable human being. He was the kindest son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Buddy was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. No one came close to the love and empathy he showed to everyone.
Buddy started working for Oscar Roux as a young teenager and continued to work for Tom Roux while he attended Lowell State. He met the love of his life at Roux's Market. Buddy went on to work in the plastic industry in Clinton, MA. Buddy helped build Nemco by working with Italgrani in Ayer Ma, where he worked for several years before moving to Bemis in Shirley. There, he found great company and wonderful friends with whom he enjoyed working, fishing, and golfing. Buddy remained at Bemis until his second cancer diagnosis in 2022. We know Buddy missed Bemis but unfortunately couldn't keep up the work he did during his first diagnosis in 2012.
He was the hardest working and most conscientious employee, always going above and beyond even if it wasn't his job. After his first diagnosis in 2012, he would go to work after his treatments.
Buddy always enjoyed family vacations, especially the annual Shorey vacation to the Outer Banks. He loved camping, deep-sea fishing, golfing, playing hockey, watching the Patriots and the Bruins, and spending time with his wife, kids, grandchildren, and friends.
Buddy leaves his heartbroken wife of 39 years, Charlene. They would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on September 15. He leaves his son Buddy Shorey, his daughter-in-law Raquel, Natalie Goodwin, and son-in-law Max. His beloved grandchildren, Rachel, Joseph, Harper, and Tripp, were his pride and joy.
He also leaves his brothers Larry and sister-in-law Karen, Kevin, and Craig, his sister-in-law Elaine, his sister Kim and brother-in-law Jared, and sister-in-law Kim and her partner Dennis and his beloved chihuahua, Nadia.
He leaves numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he considered his kids and grandkids. He also leaves his close friends at Bemis and lifelong friends Marty, Paul, Michael, Kurt, and especially his childhood friend Mark McNulty.
His family would like to thank Dr. Justin Maykel, a remarkable doctor who saved Buddy's life at UMass Worcester and gave us an additional 12 years with him. We also thank Dr. Korapati at Burbank Hospital and the wonderful nurses at UMass and Burbank who took good care of him over the years. We want to thank Beacon Hospice, who gave Buddy the comfort he needed near the end.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony's Parish, followed by a reception at St. Anthony's Hall.
The family requests that friends donate to Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, 234 Barnum Rd, Devens, MA 01434, in lieu of flowers. Buddy wants to continue helping those in need with food insecurity.
